Duquette talks (Orioles to spend extensive resources in FA)

Has a lot of resources to spend and will. Dan would rather not spend on FA's but trades instead, The Ownership wants to be active with FAs.

Want's to resign Davis, if not, someone of that level. And a top of the rotation starter.

Looking for a couple of outfielders, Jim asked about Son twice, Dan declined to comment.

Ah-seop Son

Want to sign a starters and a reliever. A couple of both and outfielders.

Some payroll flexibility, Angleos did not just give him the check book and say go spend. Mr. Angelos wants to be active.

Building a team that can be good year in and out.

Wieters was a free agent.

Does he count?

"I was kinda surprised that Matt signed the qualifying offer. Matt expected a contract in excess of 40 million dollars. He should be ready to come and have a good year for the Orioles." " It impacts the resources some this year. But it's a one year contract for Matt. He likes playing in Baltimore." " From the Orioles perspective, we tried to extend the relationship a couple of times and it did not work out. This is a way to extend the relationship." "He likes the coaches, geographically it works for him and his family."

"I think you are probably wondering if we still have resources to sign another high priced Free Agent like Chris Davis and the answer to that is yes we do."

In before the "we cant spend and compete" crowd. Or the "we'll set the franchise back decades if we do a bad contract" crowd.

"There is not a lot of power on the market. We tried to sign Chris long term and were not successful." "Not sure where that market will end up."

from ESPN

Jim Bowden

Orioles GM Dan Duquette just told us that they have the resources to spend and that includes both Chris Davis and a top of rotation starter. They are going to be big players in free agency. Duquette also said he expects free agency to move much more swiftly this off-season because all parties understand the qualifying offer and system much better after the last two years.

-A lot of the Boras clients don't sign right away.- "Once the players get into free agency, the clubs try to put together the best club they can, as quickly as they can."

"Interested in signing players that do not have a qualifying offer attached. They should sign quickly, and then there will be the ones that have an offer for those teams that are not so worried about giving up a draft pick."

A number of these quotes seem contradictory...

I am re-listening in case I missed something. The Angelos check book quote was much laughter from all parties. "These high priced shopping sprees don't always work out like you want. I would rather be in some other markets."

I think he was saying that they had the money to bring in the players they need to compete, in spite of Wieters. A bat like Davis' and a #2 or 3 SP, plus a RP and an OF. I think he hedged on Davis, not knowing where his market will land, and probably is talking about Kazmir or Leake as SP possibility.
